Ghana captain Andre Ayew says news of Christian Atsu being trapped under the rubble after the earthquake in Turkey has left him sad and down.

The forward for Nottingham Forest claimed there are no words to adequately express how he is feeling right now because he is so close to Atsu.

Atsu was discovered to have been trapped under the debris earlier on Monday following the severe earthquake in Turkey.

Taner Savut, the club's sporting director, and Atsu, a player for the Turkish team Hatayspor, were both buried beneath the debris.

But on Tuesday morning, it was announced that the Ghanaian had finally been located alive and was being treated at a hospital, after hours of looking for the pair.

That good news was short-lived, however, as a subsequent update claimed that the claims were inaccurate and that the footballer had not yet been saved.

Ayew added that he has been in touch with the family of his comrade and expressed his hopes and prayers that Atsu would be located soon.

"I'm depressed and quite sad. No words can adequately express how we, the Ghanaians, feel about this circumstance. Being close to him has made it difficult for me personally over the past few days, Ayew told Sky Sports.

"Because we are so saddened by the situation and hope that he will be fine, the players have been attempting to communicate with one another and contact the family to find out what is going on. The entire nation of Ghana is in prayer for his secure return.

Thermal cameras, in the meantime, have verified that numerous individuals are still alive despite being buried beneath the collapsed structure where footballer Atsu was residing prior to the terrible earthquake.
